Mr.Pear – personal project

Vintage Birnenschnapps – Mr.Pear

A fruit shaped, awkward Swiss yodeler called Herr Pear demonstrates the passion he has for Mario Haller’s pear Schnapps.

We started this interesting and challenging project a year ago. Christian Bircher came to us with some amazing concept art and asked us to bring it to life. We agreed.
We began by creating a digital sculpture of the character inside the computer. It took a lot a long time to craft all the facial expressions and still keep the original essence of the character. Pears are not flexible like the muscle and skin of a human face, so a lot of experimentation was needed to get it looking believable.
Parallel to our work, the yodeling was being recorded in a sound studio. This became the most valuable asset to our work because the character animation had to match the same tone and energy as the yodeling.

Mr.Pear was featured in the 07:2015 Edition of the DIGITAL PRODUCTION magazin and made it on the cover page

We did not try to simulate the cloth that made his jacket but instead used techniques which allowed us to control the behavior and look of the cloth without having to wait for a long calculation process.
It was very important we got the beard looking right and many hours was spent digitally combing and styling it into position, sometimes modifying one hair at a time.

As the project was completed it was worth all the effort because it turned out better than we had hoped.

Now the website is online and you can yodel in the tradition of our grandfathers.
